Challenge coins are medallions that symbolize membership, recognition, and pride in an organization. They have a rich history that may date back to ancient Rome, where soldiers were given bonus coins with the legion's mark as a reward for valor. Instead of spending the coins, soldiers often kept them as mementos. In more recent times, challenge coins have been used in the military and law enforcement agencies to recognize members for their service and achievements. Challenge coins are still used today by active and retired members of the Armed Forces, who may challenge each other to present their coins in social settings resulting in the purchase of a round of drinks for the establishment if the person being challenged cannot show their coin on the spot.
